God is Holy: Understanding the Awe-Inspiring Purity of God

Holy, Holy, Holy: What Does God’s Holiness Actually Mean?

If “God is love” comforts us, the phrase “God is holy” might make us pause. This attribute is central to understanding God, yet it can feel mysterious. To call God holy is to declare that He is utterly unique, set apart, and pure. He is morally perfect, completely separate from all sin and corruption.

The angels around His throne don’t cry, “Loving, loving, loving” or “Mighty, mighty, mighty.” They cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” (Isaiah 6:3, NIV). The triple repetition signifies the ultimate supremacy of this attribute. His holiness is the standard against which all else is measured.

The Standard for Our Lives

God’s holiness isn’t meant to frighten us into hiding (though a healthy, reverent awe is appropriate). It is meant to define how we live.

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.'” (1 Peter 1:15-16, NIV)

This call to holiness is not a call to perfect performance, but to a life set apart for God’s purposes. It’s about allowing the Holy Spirit to conform our character, thoughts, and actions to His character. Because we serve a holy God, we are called to live distinctly different lives that reflect His purity and love to the world.

Worship in Spirit and in Truth

Understanding God’s holiness transforms our worship. It moves us from a casual, consumer-minded approach to a reverent, awe-filled encounter. We come not just to get something, but to acknowledge who He is.

We can approach Him with confidence because of Jesus (Hebrews 4:16), but we must never forget that we are approaching the thrice-holy God of the universe. This balance creates a worship that is both intimate and awe-inspiring.

A Prayer for Reverence and Purity

Lord God Almighty, I am in awe of your perfect holiness. Forgive me for the times I have taken your majesty lightly. Thank you that through Jesus, I can approach you. Now, by your Spirit, shape me and set me apart. Make me more like you—pure, righteous, and dedicated to your purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
